Introduction: Look to God with complete calmness. Trust God with controlled confidence. Understand that Contention only last temporarily. These were the three points from last weeks sermon. When life seems to shatter our hopes. Today I want to continue this series on Psalms 62. As a reminder, let me re-state that this Psalm’s dominant teaching or applied principles is on the Psalmist’s confidence in God instead of relying on human devices. We all will need a steady hand or a reliance on a source of power that is greater than ours to progress through life. Situations will arise and often time they are beyond our control. Then there are those circumstances that arise that we failed to heed the warnings. How can I hold it steady when life seems to be crumbling and dissipating?
Perils of Pressure
Intense pressure in any form can cause us to become shaken, worried and fearful. We live in a day and age where pressure one of the major factor in something or some one from functioning or responding in a manner that is healthy for our stability. Pressure can cause stress and make us sleepless, short-tempered and over-anxious. We can easily move from productive to survival mode. But the Psalmist approach to handling pressure is not a conventional one but it is a proven and Word based one that is of benefit to every believer. (Psalms 62:5) The perils of pressure intensifies when one fails to rely on a reliable source to keep them. The Psalmist give no indication that he will trust or wait on any other source than God. Its not easy to wait but its best to wait.
Power of Perseverance
To persevere is to be persistent, refuse to stop. This is the demeanor or language that the text suggest. For God alone because I know what He can do. Can you wait with the assurance of knowing that God is all you need. Or, are you presumptuous, anxious, in a hurry? The Psalmist can persevere because he rest or clings to the support on which he is assured that provides salvation and in whom he glorifies. “On God rests my salvation and my glory” Are you resting in Him or do you rely on inadequate sources that only temporarily satisfies. God has the power to preserve and meet your every need. The Psalmist knows this so he encourages those who read and listen to his testimony, simply saying from my interpretation, Let me introduce you to God, who is able to hold you steady in the midst of any kind of a storm.
Presence of Providence
Providence is the guardianship and control exercised by a deity. Since God is our sovereign Deity, His presence in our affairs is much needed to keep us through stormy times. Corona virus is a storm that is affecting the whole world and the only way that you and I are going to experience some inner peace in the midst of this temporary season of COVID-19 is to adopt David’s attitude and approach to it. Personal trust, rest, or confidence in God is vital to every Christian. “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” To trust in our human resources are a delusion because God is the only one who can supply our every need. The Psalmist says trust Him, pour out your heart before Him, He is our refuge. Men ought to always pray and faint not. Petition His presence in your daily life in order that you may be led and kept by Him.
Closure: Yes, God is our very present help in the time of trouble. Although we may struggle with seen and unseen dangers, we can rest assured that He is mine, He is the substance, our ever lasting portion. When the storms of life are raging, God is right there in our midst, and He has given us all that we will ever need to hold steady in life’s storms. Jesus is our source of perfect peace in every storm of life. The Psalmist testifies to the fact that God is his rock and salvation.
I’ve seen the lightening flashing, I’ve felt sin breakers dashing, trying to conquer my soul, but I heard the voice of Jesus telling me to fight on, He promise, never to leave me, no! never, never to leave me.
